History of Chengalpattu medical college dates back to days before 1965,when it was a district head quarters hospital .In the year 1965 it was upgraded as a teaching institution with 250 beds for giving a condensed MBBS course for kilpauk medical college trained D.M and S students.Later it was developed into a full fledged medical college for giving reagular under graduate courses with an annual admission of 50 students.Mr Vedachalam Mudaliar the then chairman of   chengalpattu municipality donated vast area for the college. The first dean of the college was was  Dr P.Natarajan.

With a humble beginning the college was developed in many stages.In 1970 the institution started admitting girl students.The first batch of medical graduates passed out in 1972, in the same year college had honour of conducting national anatomy conference under the guidance of Prof Dr. Jayavelu the head of department of anatomy then.Initially ,the students had to take the university examinations in Chennai.In 1974 the university  exams started being conducted in chengalpattu.

Over the period of time the college has seen a lot of progress.Various new edifices to make the institution more beautiful include an auditorium with a seating capacity of 500 and a lecture hall for 300 students. Two new ladies and gents hostel with capacity of 100 each has been constructed.Two well equppied gymnasiums have been recently opened . A new cafeteria and air conditioned library is soon going to be opened.

The hospital at its dawn, was functioning with basic departments which include medicine, surgery, O&G, paediatrics, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ENT and Psychiatry.As the days went by super speciality depatrments started functioning by making our hospital a tertiary care centre with speciality approach. Various superspeciality department functioning in the  college now are neurology,nephrology,paediric surgery,plastic surgery,urology,neurology .PG courses in the college started in 2006, now there are 14 pg seats General Medicine (3), General Surgery (3), Anaesthesiology (3), Obstetrics and gynaecology (2), Paediatrics (2) and Skin and STD (1) with 1M.Ch seat in plastic surgery. In the year 2004 nursing school and one year training course in physiotherapy, theatre assistant, lab assistant were also started.

The instituition is marching towards its golden jubilee in 2015 with full vigour and hope of further developments.
